USe cases of Burr-free components

Aerospace and defence for meeting mission-critical tolerances, down to the micron, for applications like sensors and shielding.

Automotive components where, for example, oil would cause protrusions to flake off and contaminate oil in gaskets.

Green energy where rapid prototyping can help in R&D projects.

Medical where high-precision shims and meshes need to have a zero tolerance for contamination.

What are THE BENEFITS OF having burr-free surfaces?

The benefits of chemical etching services go well beyond volume and precision. The finish of the chemical etching process can be highly optimised to leave no protrusions.

In precision manufacturing, edge smoothness isn’t just a preference, it’s imperative for maximal performance. Unlike traditional machining, drilling or laser cutting, our chemical etching process is burr-free by nature.

  • Protect Your Application: Protrusions can break off in high-flow environments (like oil systems), causing catastrophic contamination.
  • Achieve a Snug Fit: Perfect for shims and small-space applications where microns matter.
  • Enhanced Safety: Eliminates sharp protrusions, making components safer for assembly and end-use.
  • Saves on Secondary Costs: Due to natural burr-free finish, additional tooling isn’t required.

QUESTIONS about BURR-FREE Surfaces

What is a burr-free surface?

A burr-free surface, or a metal component that has no FOD, on a metal component is a finish which is completely free of protrusions which can be created through traditional machining processes like cutting and drilling. Chemical etching and photo etching mitigate protrusions on metal components, compared to laser cutting and stamping.

What is FOD in metal component manufacturing?

FOD stands for foreign object debris refers to any fine pieces of metal from the manufacturing process that has broken off. FOD can cause incredible system failures in applications used in aerospace and automotive, for example.

How does chemical etching achieve a burr-free finish?

It is a non-mechanical, non-thermal process where metal is removed chemically, leaving a natural high-optimised, smooth edge. Protrusions are caused by stress and chemical etching is a no-stress process.

Can you create burr-free finishes from custom drawings?

Yes, burr-free requirements are usually specified in drawings, and we produce parts to your exact micron-level specifications.
